The long-awaited revival of one of gaming’s most beloved tactical RPGs is finally here. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles has officially launched on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and will arrive on PC via Steam and Steam Deck the following day.

First released in 1997, Final Fantasy Tactics earned legendary status for its deep strategy, complex political drama, and emotional storytelling. Now, Square Enix and Bandai Namco Entertainment Asia are bringing it into the modern era with enhanced visuals, full voice acting, and the option to relive the original version through a classic mode.
A War Reignited in Ivalice
The story takes players back to the Kingdom of Ivalice, a land fractured by class struggles and the ambitions of noble houses still reeling from the Fifty Years’ War. At its center are Ramza Beoulve and Delita Heiral—two childhood friends divided by circumstance and ideology. What begins as loyalty soon spirals into betrayal, sacrifice, and a brutal struggle for control over a kingdom torn apart by power.
Modern Enhancements, Timeless Strategy
The Ivalice Chronicles isn’t just a visual update—it’s a full modern reimagining of the tactical RPG experience:
- Refined Tactical Combat – Command units in turn-based battles across diverse terrains where positioning, class synergy, and terrain strategy can decide victory or defeat.
- Over 20 Jobs and 300 Abilities – From knights and dragoons to black mages and time mages, every combination offers new ways to outthink the battlefield.
- Enhanced and Classic Versions – The enhanced edition introduces new dialogue, a modernized UI, and full voice acting, along with quality-of-life features like fast-forward and autosave. Meanwhile, the classic version retains the faithful War of the Lions translation for those who want the 1997 experience intact.
The Visionaries Behind the Revival
The Ivalice Chronicles reunites key members of the original team, including Kazutoyo Maehiro (Director), Hiroshi Minagawa (Art Director), and Yasumi Matsuno (Original Script and Scenario Writer)—joined by a new generation of developers led by Shoichi Matsuzawa (Producer) and Ayako Yokoyama (Co-Director).
Together, they’ve built a version that honors the legacy of the original while pushing the tactical genre forward for a new audience.
Voices That Bring Ivalice to Life
The remake also features a stellar voice cast, with Joe Pitts (Ramza), Gregg Lowe (Delita), Hannah Melbourn (Agrias), Timothy Watson (Cidolfus), and Harry McEntire (Mustadio) leading the charge. Notably, Cody Christian (Cloud Strife) and Briana White (Aerith Gainsborough) make cameo appearances—tying together threads from across the Final Fantasy universe.
More Ways to Dive In
Square Enix also released a new launch trailer highlighting the enhanced visuals and combat systems, along with a two-part developer blog where Maehiro and Yokoyama share insights on new features like added conversations, the State of the Realm system, and how they approached balancing nostalgia with innovation.
Fans can also catch the official launch livestream hosted by Jesse Cox, featuring Joe Pitts and Gregg Lowe as they discuss bringing Ramza and Delita’s story back to life.
A Classic Reborn for a New Generation
For long-time fans, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles feels like a homecoming. For newcomers, it’s a chance to experience one of gaming’s most intricate and emotionally charged stories—now polished for today’s platforms without losing the spirit that made it timeless.
