Lola’s Unconditional Love, a true story by Francis Cañeda.
There are relationships in life that shape us deeply, the ones that become the foundation of who we are. If you’ve ever watched Coco, you’ll know the kind of love I’m talking about: the quiet, unwavering kind that wraps around you like a warm blanket. For me, that love comes from my Lola (grandmother).

Growing up on my Lola’s side of the family was something truly special. As an only child, I didn’t have siblings to share my childhood with, but I never felt alone. My Lola was always there, giving me unconditional love in ways that are hard to describe, offering guidance, and sharing stories from her past. She has always been my constant companion, my source of comfort, and my strength.
Being “laking lola” wasn’t just about the care she gave; it was about the values she taught. My Lola showed me the importance of kindness, humility, and faith. I still carry those lessons with me today. She taught me how to be strong without being harsh, how to love without expecting anything in return, and how to give even when I have little. Her life has always been a quiet example of resilience. I remember her waking up early to prepare my school uniform every morning, listening to her favorite radio shows, and somehow still finding time to laugh, dance, and make me feel special every single day.
When I was a child, I cherished every moment we spent together. We were always side by side whenever we went out, even when money was tight. As long as she saw me happy, that was enough for her. We always ate together, and over time, I learned how to cook vegetables just for her, something I’ll always hold close to my heart.

Now that she’s 85, her body has grown weaker after a mild stroke. As her grandchild, it’s my turn to care for her the way she cared for me. I buy her medicines and help with her daily needs because that, to me, is what love truly looks like.
Even now, as an adult, my bond with my Lola remains strong. While others have grown distant from their childhood routines, I’ve stayed close to her, not out of obligation but out of love. At 22, I still turn to her for advice, listen to her stories, and treasure our conversations.
She listens without judgment, speaks with wisdom, and loves without limits. In her eyes, I’m never too old to be cared for and never too grown to be reminded of my worth.
